🎃 What’s Hot for Halloween 2025: A Costume Guide for North Fork Families
Hi parents! My favorite holiday is next month! My twins, aka my "Haloweenies," are turning 17. Much easier than last year's Double Sweet 16 party planning chaos!
It’s that magical (and sometimes mildly chaotic) time of year again; Halloween season is creeping up fast! Whether your kids are dreaming of dressing up like their favorite superhero, pop star, or glow-in-the-dark jellyfish, we’ve got you covered.
We’ve rounded up the biggest costume trends for 2025 and sorted them by age group, plus some DIY inspiration and local spots here on the North Fork where you can find what you need. Let’s get spooky!
👶 Preschoolers (Ages 2–5): Whimsy & Wonder
At this age, Halloween is pure joy, tiny giggles, big imaginations, and costumes that sparkle, wiggle or roar.
Top picks this year:
- Barbie & Ken (think bright and playful, not glam and grown-up)
- Spider-Verse heroes like Miles Morales is a big hit!
- Classic animals & mythical creatures like unicorns, bumblebees, dinosaurs and mermaids
DIY ideas: Try a rain cloud costume with a cotton ball hat and blue ribbon raindrops, or turn a hoodie into a dinosaur with felt triangles. Super simple, super cute!
🧒 Elementary School (Ages 6–11): Color, Characters & Creativity
Kids at this age want to stand out and this year’s trends let them do just that!
What’s trending:
- Wednesday Addams: Thanks to the Netflix revival.
- Lilo & Stitch: Especially with the new movie buzz.
- Wicked-inspired costumes (green glitter and capes are very in)
- M3GAN: For those who like a creepy twist
DIY inspo: Use a thrifted dress for a vampire ballerina, or create a Power Ranger from colorful activewear and cardboard accessories.
👧 Middle Schoolers (Ages 12–14): Cool, Clever & a Bit Edgy
Middle schoolers want a costume that’s cool, not cute, and definitely not too much help from Mom and Dad.
Hot choices:
- Wednesday Addams (still going strong!)
- Cyberpunk & AI-inspired costumes with neon lights and silver accents
- Barbiecore, but ironic (think hot pink with a twist)
- Meme mashups: Whatever went viral last month is fair game!
DIY tip: Grab a light-up hoodie, face gems, and holographic makeup to create an AI avatar look that’s futuristic and easy.
🧑🎓 High School (Ages 15–18): Statement Looks & Icon Vibes
High schoolers are dressing to impress—and maybe to win a costume contest or two.
This year’s stars:
- Taylor Swift eras (yes, it’s still a thing!)
- Deadpool & Wolverine duo costumes.
- Oppenheimer-themed throwback looks; think vintage scientist meets dark academia.
- Upcycled fantasy themes with LED accents and flowing fabrics.
DIY it: Hit the thrift store for a white button-down and suspenders to make an Einstein-meets-Steampunk look or go full glam with a celestial goddess theme using metallic fabrics and fairy lights.
Thrifting is always fun, too! Dig in, you never know what treasures you may find!
Don't forget to donate costumes, too. Share the happiness!
