Did you know that you can attend any Suffolk library event

Even if it’s not in your town?

Hey Parents,

I just found out something super cool that I had to share with you. Did you know that with your Suffolk County library card, you can actually go to events at any library in the county; not just your local one?

If you’ve got kids, this is such a win. There are Storytimes, crafts, STEM activities, author visits, and so much more happening every week all over Suffolk. So, if your local library’s schedule doesn’t line up, or you just want to try something different, you’ve got options!

That’s why in my weekly newsletter; like always, I’ll be rounding up some of the best library events happening across the North Fork so you don’t have to dig through all the calendars yourself. There’s always something fun out there for the kids (and sometimes even for us grown-ups 😉).

Public Libraries of Suffolk County, NY home

Here’s the scoop on how to get your card and make the most of it:

If you live in Suffolk County, NY, or even if you spend time there…. getting a Livebrary card (a Suffolk County public library card) opens up a world of possibilities. Not only can you borrow books or digital media, but you can also visit and take part in programs at any Suffolk library. That’s a huge benefit, especially if you have kids who love storytimes, workshops, or family events at libraries across the county, especially the North Fork!

What is the Livebrary Card?

“Livebrary” is the name for the digital branch of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System.
With a Livebrary (or Suffolk County public library) card, you gain access to:

  • eBooks, audiobooks, and digital media to download or stream via Livebrary’s collections
  • Research databases, historical newspapers, maps, and more via Livebrary’s digital resources
  • Physical library services:checking out books, DVDs, museum passes, etc.
  • Attending events, classes, and programs offered at any Suffolk library branch
  • Additional perks like museum passes or discounted tickets through participating libraries
Attend Events at Any Suffolk Library; It’s Your Right

One of the biggest perks: you are not limited to the library in your town. With your Suffolk County library card, you can walk into most Suffolk libraries and attend events there; even if it’s not your “home branch.” The Suffolk library event calendar lists many programs that take place across the county. ( I list all the ones on the NF)

That means if your child’s favorite author is doing a reading in a library across the county or there’s a Saturday STEM workshop somewhere else, your card gives you access. Many, if not all,  events are open to the public and free, and only some require prior registration.

For families, this is a game-changer ; more choices, more locations, more chances to find something that works with your schedule.

How to Get a Livebrary / Suffolk County Library Card

Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Apply online for a temporary digital card
You can apply for a 30-day eCard via Livebrary’s “Get a Card” page. This gives you immediate digital access to eBooks and     databases while your residency is verified.

  2. Go to a physical library in     person
After applying, you may need to visit a Suffolk library with proof of residency (ID, mail, utility bill, etc.) to convert your digital card into a full-access card for borrowing physical items.
  3. For children/minors
When applying for a child’s card, a parent or guardian may need to be present and show identification.
  4. Renewals, lost cards, etc.
If your card is lost or expires, each library has its own policies (often a small replacement fee). Always notify a library if your card is lost or stolen.

Why It’s Especially Great If You Have Kids

  • More event options: Kids’ storytimes, crafts, STEM workshops, reading clubs; more branches mean more choices.
  • Flexibility: Maybe your local library’s schedule doesn’t work. With your card, you can pick an event somewhere else.
  • Exposure: Kids can experience different library atmospheres, meet new librarians, attend special visiting author events, etc.
  • Shared access: Siblings or friends who live in other parts of Suffolk County can also benefit from the same countywide system.

A Few Tips & Caveats

  • While many events are free and open to all, some require registration or are limited to library residents or cardholders. Always check the event description.
  • Some libraries offer museum passes or discounted attractions, but the benefits vary by branch.
  • The digital card (30-day eCard) is typically for online resources; to borrow physical items, you’ll want full card access via a physical library visit.

✨ Bottom line: If you live in Suffolk County (or spend time there), get yourself a Livebrary / Suffolk library card. Once you have one, you’re not stuck in your town’s library; you can roam the county and attend events everywhere.

📅 And don’t forget..... I’ll be sharing highlights of the best upcoming North Fork library events for families every week right here in my newsletter. Make sure you check back so you don’t miss out on the fun!
