Why I Still Love Halloween: Mom Edition

Halloween has always been my Favorite Holiday!. Crisp fall air, colorful leaves, spooky decorations and let’s be honest, an excuse to eat candy guilt-free!! This year feels extra special: my twins are turning 17 and prepping for college. Blink, and suddenly your tiny humans are driving themselves (and you) everywhere. I’m still their ATM, maid, and Uber driver, but now I occasionally get charged for gas. Small victories.

For my partner and me, the adventure continues. We’re heading to the huge annual family party in Pennsylvania in our new-to-us 20-year-old RV, fully embracing the Viking life. I’m diving headfirst into DIY costumes, because nothing says “mom fun” like hot glue burns and scissor cut mishaps at 10 PM. The kids, of course, are still creatively planning their own outfits: My daughter and her BF are set to be a dueling cartoon couple and my son as an Imperial Officer. (He is a huge history buff)

Even with college prep, driver’s ed, and decoding teen slang that makes me feel like I need a translator, Halloween is my constant. It’s the season for creativity, chaos, and a little chaos-induced therapy....aka candy breaks while I glue their 50th accessory.

Why I still can’t get enough:

  1. Creativity Unleashed – DIY costumes double as therapy. Nothing says zen like wrestling with fabric and glitter glue at midnight.
  2. Family Bonding – Brainstorming, decorating and celebrating together creates memories… and occasionally minor disasters that become legendary stories.
  3. Tradition + Nostalgia – Watching my twins go from tiny trick-or-treaters to college-bound teens is bittersweet. But at least they still pose for pictures (sometimes).
  4. Community Spirit – Halloween brings neighbors together. Bonus: it’s the only time a mom can talk candy strategy with strangers and feel socially responsible.
  5. Pure Fun – Eat candy, laugh at yourself in a ridiculous costume and embrace the chaos. Wine helps.

So this year, whether you’re gluing bones to a viking helmet, trying desperately to replicate armor with household items, chasing teenagers around trying to get the car keys back or trying to finish a college essay while hot-gluing a sword, dive in. Have Fun!!

Send me your pics at Stacin@MacaroniKid.com or post on my Facebook page; I’ll feature them in next week’s newsletter.

Halloween proves that no matter how old the kids get, a little glitter, hot glue, costumes and laughter go a long way… and sometimes a mom just needs a glass of wine to survive it. (Like Me, lol)
